Please complete the following sentences:
ReplyDeleteThe ideal teacher would not stop students from exploring and questioning because the instructor him or herself doesn't know yet. It's best to teach students that if you don't know -- we figure out how to find out! Show them how to research. It's okay to not know. It's not okay to just say -- well --- I guess I'll just never know.
The ideal teacher would take time to notice when a student isn't okay or needs someone to connect. I spent a lot of time in high school needing someone. There were a lot of adults telling me no or things that couldn't happen. There was a lot of negativity and yelling. A lot of farm work and swearing. There was a lot of death around me in livestock and family. There was a lot of trauma in various ways. I turned to reading. My dad always taught me that I could get out if I was smart enough and thought/ read my way out. (Cue Hamilton.) But my teachers really didn't want people to do anything but memorize and regurgitate the study guides. So if I asked questions -- well, it wasn't encouraged. It turned negative and spiteful eventually because I got tired of being shut down and told no. I was feeling trapped.
Thus, I have aspired as an educator to try to help. I try to see people who need to ask and see and explore. I try to help them find answers. Maybe I don't know -- but we will find someone who does. Maybe because I take the time that person is going to go out and do something amazing someday. Or maybe because I help they're going to just break some family curses and save themselves. Either way -- well worth the time and effort.

Thinking about these statements through the eyes of my students is a powerful reminder of what matters most to them. I would say that the ideal School Counselor makes students feel important, seen, and heard. They listen without judgment and without rushing, focusing on understanding the student rather than immediately providing an answer. An ideal School Counselor would not ignore students who are struggling or make them feel invisible when they need support. They notice when students are having a difficult time and are willing to support them through challenges. They ensure students feel valued and that school feels like a place where they belong. The ideal School Counselor creates an environment where students feel respected, supported, and encouraged to grow. They take the time to get to know students, believe in their potential, and help them work through difficulties rather than giving up on them.
ReplyDeleteAn ideal School Counselor would avoid behaviors that undermine trust or student confidence. They would not dismiss student concerns, make assumptions about students’ abilities or motivations, or treat students as just another task on a list. They would avoid being hurried, distracted, or unapproachable, as these behaviors can make students feel unseen or unimportant. Instead, they maintain a consistent, caring presence that fosters safety, belonging, and growth.
The ideal teacher would not grade solely on tests, but rather a variety of assessments.
ReplyDeleteThe ideal teacher would understand that all students learn differently.
